Meemaw List

In an attempt to get Meemaw settled, I've compiled a list of move-in tasks. Please add any you can think of...and I'm talking to Meemaw here, assuming she sees the blog.

1. Transfer Doctor. I talked to Dr. Zuber's office. He can take Meemzaw on as a new patient. Right now, his new patient appointments are booked through the year. However, his new partner or PA (both of whom we think VERY HIGHLY OF) can see Meemaw within a few weeks. From there, Dr. Zuber will be able to see her regularly.

2. Oncologist (consulting): I'm checking around for recommendation. The cancer center at Watauga Medical is top-rated.

3. Bank: For a small town, Boone has an overabundance of banks (14 at last count). There are two very close to Meemaw's new house (BB&T and Blue Ridge Savings Bank). Our bank is High Country and it's good.

4. Pharmacy: Although CVS is very close to her new house, other choices include Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Boone Drug, Walgreen, etc.

5. Address: There are at least three options, she can get her mail at the new house or at our house or get a PO Box (easy to access post office next to Kmart).

6. Get library card: easy

7. Phone: I checked with U.S. Cellular. They do not offer coverage here so we will have to cancel and get either Verizon or AT&T/Cingular. I'll ask Nancy Leonard which service works best at her house.

8. Utilities/Satellite at the trailer (Joyce said you guys could handle all that).

I think a post office box would be good cause that would give her a reason to get out and go to Kmart or whatever...thanks for looking into all of this Jason!!!

She has her checking account with ORNL or Y-12, one of the local credit unions. Coordinating her finances will be a biggy, remember Pappy's going to be doing the transfers, probably sending her a check every month. Now he deposits so much into her account every month. But if she has to open another account in Boone he can't just deposit straight into her account.Something to think about.

He can just send her a ck & she can deposit it...shouldn't be any trouble...she'll probably have to open an account up there...she could find a bank that has branches in both locations...we still have our account w/ regions but we use the branch down here..we just had to get new cks..

Unless the state employees credit union here has some kind of connection with ORNL, she will have to open a new account. However, if Pappy will agree to send a check, that should be no problem (hey, that got us through college didn't it — waiting for the pappy/meemaw check every week for beer....err...groceries.

I can also keep track of her account on Quicken if she wants just like Pappy does with her current checking.

If Meemaw's cell plan has local as long distance, she won't have to cancel. Her phone should still work here. We just don't have an office here, but the service should still be okay, unless there are limitations on her plan. It might not be a good idea to cancel. This, after all, may not be a permanent move.

Meemaw is not planning to stay in that apartment forever (even if she moved here). It would probably be better to get a post office box, and then it wouldn't matter where she was living.

Pappy called me this morning at 6:57 AM to say he thought I should get Meemaw's power of attorney for selling property, stocks, etc. I talked to her about it and she said that was a good idea. She is studying about her prescriptions, bank , etc. But I think I have convinced her of the simpleness of all that. This morning she said she had slept better last night than she had in a long time. She said "just not worrying so much." So.... maybe this is a good idea. I agree with the PO Box idea.
Although Janie did not show up at Pappy's yesterday, Meemaw is still going to stay with us ,I hope until Saturday. We are going to the Cherokee football game tonight and out to supper.
Jason and Stacy thank you all so much for all the work you are putting into this. I believe meemaw seems a little excited about it mixed with some dread about all the things that really aren't even a problem except in her mind.

I'm glad she and Pappy had a farewell moment. That's sweet.

I talked to Meemaw last night too. She started to cry talking about her family and how good they are to her. She feels grateful that everybody wants what is best for her.
